In many companies planning processes like the monthly forecast or the yearly budget have become fixed rituals in the yearly calendar. In that case it is not always clear to everyone involved what the different planning processes are there for.

Planning processes have different purpose. They deliver data that will be used for target setting, for deviation analysis etc. Another important fact is that these processes themselves have a behavioral control effect. The way planning processes are designed influences the way people work and think. Sometimes this can have negative implications. The traditional budgeting processes have earned a bad reputation, because of their negative effects on employees.
